One
major goal of the Cordell Hull Foundation, formed in 1951, is to expand into the 21st century with a broad
technological perspective. For that reason, the Executive Director
is making inroads toward establishing teacher-training curricula for J-1
exchange visitor teachers from France, Germany, and Holland in Silicon
Valley.
A
technology training program for exchange teachers is in development.
The Foundation is collaborating with several schools to design and
implement a special training program for French teachers. The aim
of the program is for foreign teachers to learn
the
basic computer skills needed in their work not only to teach but also to
keep apace with students who are exceptionally computer literate in
Silicon Valley and the Bay Area. A Needs Assessment questionnaire
was developed used to create custom-designed technology training
programs in several schools.
CHF
plans to create and offer professional technology training for teachers
in schools where CHF currently sponsors J-1 exchange teachers
by focusing on the specific needs of each school in the area of
technology expertise. CHF has established alliances with over
fifty
schools, public school districts, and state departments of education
across the U.S. in thirty states. The Foundation also eventually plans to integrate
major corporations into plans to assist in providing solutions for
professional training needs of teachers and adult professionals.
Initially, the focus will be directed to educational and training
programs in the field of technology.
The Cordell
Hull Foundation will address the practical constraints of education
professionals and teachers by providing individualized training programs
at the school, institution or corporation. The programs are to be
supplemented by Internet resources and connectivity.
CHF Tech Needs Assessment Forms - English, French, and
Spanish
Technology Needs Assessment Forms
in three languages were mounted on the Foundation website to facilitate
easier online completion of the initial responses. CHF designed a
database in Access to collect the results automatically as soon as teachers
click on "Submit" at the end of the form. The form was translated into
French and Spanish to encourage greater participation and to insure that all
would be able to express specific needs in their own language within the
narrative sections.
A wide range of needs was
expressed depending upon grade level and subject matter taught by the
respondent.
Lesson Plans
Based on evaluations of the TECH
ASSESS forms that teachers completed online from the website, the Cordell
Hull Foundation created lesson plans. Website design was the most requested
skill, followed by Excel, PowerPoint and Photoshop. Lesson plans for Excel
are currently being designed. A lesson plan was created and delivered
for placing survey forms on a website, sending the results to a database,
and organizing them in Excel through macros.
